We believe that the key to tackling the problem is behavioural change – encouraging those who chew gum to think sensibly before they dispose of it.
Research shows that gum litterers know that they are misbehaving but view it as a minor indiscretion. The research also shows that alternative methods of disposal, to help them assuage any sense of guilt, would be welcome. We must come to their assistance – so that a new norm of behaviour is established.
We are working on an integrated programme – incorporating education and the raising of awareness, the provision of disposal solutions, the provision of appropriate cleaning systems and subsequent enforcement measures - designed to engage with consumers and with all sections of the community that have an interest in cleaner streets and pavements.
